SIFI is a clear example of our approach to supporting established businesses with strong foundations and significant growth potential. Through our investment, we helped strengthen the organization, expand international operations, and accelerate innovation across both pharmaceutical treatments and surgical solutions. These initiatives enabled the company to broaden its global reach, enter new markets, and further consolidate its position as a leading ophthalmic player.
About the investment
Founded in 1935 in Italy, SIFI is a leading player in the ophthalmic industry, developing pharmaceutical treatments and surgical solutions for eye care. At the time of 21 Invest’s investment in 2015, our approach was to build on the company’s unique combination of scientific expertise, established market presence and significant international growth potential.
Through a focused value creation strategy, we supported the strengthening of the organization, the expansion into new markets, and the acceleration of product innovation, helping transform SIFI into a leading international ophthalmic platform.

When we invested in SIFI ten years ago, we recognized the potential of an Italian excellence with a strong identity and ambitious international vision. Together with the Chines family and management team, we helped transform the company, enhancing its global footprint and innovation capabilities. Our commitment to long-term projects — such as the development of an orphan drug — embodies our philosophy: to invest responsibly, with value creation for all stakeholders at the center of our focus.
How we added value

Strengthening the organization
Recruitment of a CCO, CFO and country managers, as well as several other mid-management positions across the R&D, QRV and marketing departments.

Expanding global reach
We opened direct subsidiaries in Spain, France and Turkey, acquired a product portfolio in France, and established JVs in China and Dubai.

Accelerating innovation
In particular, an orphan drug has been developed that is now the only approved treatment for a very painful, potentially blinding and ultra-rare eye disease, Acanthamoeba Keratitis.
